Necessary Luxury: Diego Della Valle

James Wojcik

CEO and Chairman, Tod’s Group

There’s nothing nicer than receiving a handwritten note on personalized stationery, and I order mine from Grafiche Fioroni, a small company in Marches, Italy, where I live. Tod’s braided leather bracelets have become one of my trademarks—I love the touch of humor they add, even when paired with, say, this much more formal Marinella tie from Naples. And for years I’ve been collecting antique globes for my office and home. They symbolize culture, tradition, terrain and so many new possibilities.

Della Valle’s storied brand is taking a prominent position in Italy’s history: In late January, he announced that Tod’s Group will finance the complete restoration of Rome’s ancient Colosseum, at a cost of $34 million.
