It?s a virtue to reach as many senses as possible," says Ian Schrager, the visionary behind New York?s Gramercy Park Hotel. He should know. Along with the wildly lavish baroque moderne interiors designed by Julian Schnabel, Schrager wanted a similarly definitive scent woven through the hotel experience. To do so, he worked with French parfumerie Le Labo, to create the Cade 26 candle. "To make a candle with the level of refinement of a fine fragrance, the challenge is technical: diffusion, quality of burn, melt of the wax," says Fabrice Penot of Le Labo. "It may not sound sexy, but it?s critical." For Schrager and the Gramercy, Le Labo created a bold scent that mixes sandalwood with woody, smoky, very "country" notes.
