Welcome home…or rather, I should say welcome to Departures Home + Design, a brand-new stand-alone issue published for a limited audience of Platinum and Centurion card members.

For a couple of years, we’ve talked about the need for a really exciting and different sort of interiors magazine that isn’t filled with empty rooms, devoid of people and personal style. That’s the problem with too many such publications—they’re sterile and lifeless.

Back in September, I had dinner in Paris at the home of Martine and Prosper Assouline and fell in love with their apartment, a duplex in the First Arrondissement, overlooking the Palais-Royal. As the chicest of publishers, the Assoulines have very much their own style and their own point of view. Together they have also created a one-of-a-kind universe at home, without the help of brand-name decorators but instead culled from their personal worldly experiences—from the souks of Marrakech to the Saturday-morning flea markets of Paris. As they seem to truly embody the philosophy behind this magazine and its global DNA, we decided to make them official guest editors. Along the way, Departures senior editor Jason Chen rounded up a stellar cast of participants from all over the world, including Han Feng in Shanghai, Peter Shaindlin in Honolulu, New York magazine’s design editor Wendy Goodman (a ten-year Departures veteran) and Los Angeles photographer Tierney Gearon, who captures perfectly the magic of Angella Nazarian and her Persian gardens. And hopefully in THE GLOBAL GUIDE TO MATERIAL COMFORTS, edited by Jason, you’ll find all the information, or at least the information you couldn’t find anywhere else, about how we live—or want to live—now.
