20th-Century Design

Already Christie’s has shattered any previous record in the category of 20th-century decorative art—thanks especially to its $76 million sale of the Dray Collection of Art Deco this past June. The house’s next design auction, which includes this 1926 Skyscraper bookcase by Paul Frankl (estimated at $70,000 to $90,000), is a two-day, 900-lot affair expected to top $16 million. With Sotheby’s, Phillips de Pury, and Bonhams in Manhattan, Wright in Chicago, and Los Angeles Modern Auctions all staging December sales, it’s open season for collectors in this red-hot field.
