If classic cars stir your soul, then the place to be this summer is Monterey , California, from August 16-21 for another year of Monterey Car Week. Sure classic car events occur around the country all year long, but a pair of premiere competitions are the real highlights on the vintage buff’s calendar: the Concours d’Elegance event on Florida’s Amelia Island in March and this month’s invitation-only Pebble Beach competition on the West Coast. There, the Best in Show trophy and Best in Class ribbons are marks of prestige that can’t be bought—even if it does take vast sums to restore and maintain old cars, never mind purchase them.

According to Hagerty, the leading classic car insurer and a sponsor of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, auction sales in 2015 amounted to $1.45 billion, up 11 percent from the previous year. In 2016, sales are expected to hit $370 million across all Monterey Classic Car Week actions. While this figure represents a 7 percent decline over 2015, 11 cars—ranging from a 1932 Bugatti Type 55 being sold by Gooding & Co. to a 1962 Shelby Cobra being auctioned by RM Sotheby’s—are expected to fetch over $10 million each, up from last year's ten cars. Post-1980 “modern” classics are the biggest growth area, attracting the interest of younger buyers looking for a long-term investment. What Basel is to art, Pebble Beach is to classic cars.

But there’s still more to see in Monterey Car Week events, including The Quail (another high-profile gathering of luxe vintage car), the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (classic car racing at the Mazda Laguna Seca track), and a number of auctions run by companies like RM Sotheby and Rick Cole Auctions.

Here, a look into this year’s event highlights, plus what else is hot and happening in classic cars for 2016.
