Glamorous Red Lipstick

James T. Murray

Two variations on the femme fatale of lip color, vibrant red.

Pink coral may be the shade for spring and summer, but vibrant reds will always be in vogue no matter the season. The color can be glamorously bold, like the new Dior Addict Red Carpet no. 963 ($28; dior.com), or subtly soft, like one of the six new reds from Guerlain’s Rouge Automatique line (Rouge D’Enfer no. 121, shown here, $35; bergdorfgoodman.com). Rouge Automatique is a particular favorite for its cleverly designed gold chamber, an update on the original 1936 Art Deco version. A single thumb push slides open the no-cap top and slips out the stick. It was, after all, Aimé Guerlain who first created wax lipstick in a gold-plated tube, inspired by a cylinder used to mold candles back in 1870.
