The Top 12 Timepieces of 2016

More than 160 watches went head-to-head to compete in this year’s Grand Prix de Horlogerie Geneva award ceremony. Ahead of the official announcement in November, we picked a winner from each category.

For serious watch aficionados, time doesn’t stop after the beginning of the year, when brands stage their big reveals at SIHH (in January) and Baselworld (in March). Some eight months after the excitement of what’s brand-new has settled, the watch community turns to the Grand Prix de Horlogerie Geneva to decide what’s very best.

On November 10, the GPHG competition returns to the Theatre du Leman for its 15th edition, honoring one watch in a dozen different categories. Some 160+ timepieces were submitted by brands in June, and in September, a jury made up of a global constituency of master watchmakers, collectors, watch forum moderators, specialty retailers, writers, auction house executives, and other timepiece experts announced a final list of 72 competing watches, six in each category. (There is also a 13th category, a People’s Choice Award, which is selected by the general public.)

Of course, it should be noted that certain brands are not included, simply because they don’t submit their designs for consideration, opting out of the GPHG altogether. (Additionally, certain independent and affordable brands seem to have been overlooked this year by a jury that may have been too focused on the big guys.)

Still, there are enough here to pick favorites. Click through to see which timepieces we think will win for each category of this year's GPHG.
