The Havanese

Irresistibly cute as puppies, Cuba’s national dogs grow up to look like miniature sheepdogs, but—mercifully—without all the shedding. Their wavy coats, evolved from centuries of tropical frolicking, oddly protect them from heat. Once the pampered lapdog of Cuba’s aristocracy (and later, its governing elite), the Havanese was named an official breed by the American Kennel Club in 2001. Now the playful, 7- to 15-pound canine fulfills its true calling as a family pet. akc.org
