Peter Beard on Grey Gardens

"They were fabulous, never boring," says photographer Peter Beard, recalling Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edie, relatives of Jackie Onassis and Lee Radziwill whose squalid existence at their East Hampton estate was immortalized in the 1975 documentary Grey Gardens. Now the dazzling musical spawned by that cult classic, which ran off-Broadway earlier this year, moves to Broadway on November 2. Beard says it was when the authorities threatened to evict the Beales that he and Radziwill—who were lovers at the time—urged filmmakers David and Albert Maysles to make the movie. "Two raccoons lived in the house along with dozens of cats," says Beard. "They fed them Wonderbread." broadway.com
