California goldsmith Christoph Krähenmann
"I like architecture, it's something I've always been interested in," says California goldsmith Christoph Krähenmann. "Not the structures per se but the engineering elements—the magnificent bridges of Santiago Calatrava and the bold sculptural lines of Frank Gehry. And not just modern architecture but ancient as well." This appreciation can be traced to Krähenmann's childhood: The Zurich-born Santa Barbara designer spent his early years in Khartoum, where his father taught veterinary medicine at the university. "When we left the Sudan to return to Switzerland some things stuck in my head. The earth huts, the colors, the materials, the shapes and fabulous proportions. The beautiful things the Nile civilizations did over the past ten thousand years inform my work."
