At Home in Paris
Chez Vous apartment rentals
CHEZ VOUS, a 21-year-old company in Sausalito, California, that rents Paris apartments, has always been a well-kept secret. Hollywood scriptwriters, leading chefs, high-tech executives, and others have made themselves and their families at home in the company's 50 or so apartments, sprinkled throughout the most desirable arrondissements. Now Chez Vous is raising its profile with the new Portfolio Collection, 12 elegant spaces designed by interior decorator Myra Hoefer, who has ateliers in Healdsburg, California, and Paris.
Hoefer has successfully appointed these apartments with a blend of California comfort and inventive French style. In our favorite, on Rue Jacob, dove-gray walls frame antique carved-mahogany armoires and gilded Louis XVI-style armchairs. On the fabled Quai Malaquais, a spacious three-bedroom apartment affords a sweeping view directly across the Seine to the Louvre. A glamorous two-bedroom penthouse in the heart of the Latin Quarter has a light-filled, loftlike living room and a terrace with views of Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower. A one-bedroom in Saint-
Germain has a dining room expansive enough for entertaining up to six guests. The Pont Neuf and the Seine are steps from a quiet two-bedroom aerie on the peaceful Ile de la Cité, and the chic bilevel Marais three-bedroom is two blocks from the Musée Picasso.
The decor of each apartment is exquisite yet relaxed, a mix of French antiques, large velvet sofas, luxurious fabrics, downy duvets. For a two-bedroom on Rue Dauphine, Hoefer combined voluptuous caramel-colored silk-taffeta draperies and Louis XVI-style walnut chairs with Parisian panache. Most of the apartments are classically French, with tall windows, parquet floors, and "patisserie" plaster moldings. Comfortable dining chairs and large tables practically beg you to enjoy a romantic dinner—with flowers, cheeses, and wines from nearby markets. Chez Vous Portfolio Collection apartments are fully equipped with modern kitchens, dishwashers, washers and dryers (many of them by Miele), cable television, and telephones with personal answering service. Rates: $600-$900. $ Information: 415-331-2535; fax 415-331-5296; www.chezvous.com.
