Salgado's World

Photographer Sebastião Salgado is in the second year of his ongoing Genesis project, which was created "to show people the 46 percent of the planet we haven't yet destroyed, motivating them to protect what is pristine," he says. So far Salgado has shot the Galápagos (here), whales off Patagonia, and Xingu Indians in his native Brazil. Genesis was borne out of Instituto Terra, the nonprofit Salgado runs with his wife, Lélia, which is devoted to rebuilding the rainforest in Brazil's Rio Doce Valley. Ultimately, he ex-plains, "I want my pictures to help bring the environment into the global conversation."
